How to price custom orders on Etsy: common questions

How do Etsy fees work on a custom order?

The same as any other sale. For US sellers: a $0.20 listing fee, a 6.5% transaction fee on the item price plus shipping, and payment processing of 3% + $0.25 on the order total. On a $40 order with free shipping that's about $4.25, a little over 10%. If the sale came from an Offsite Ad, add that fee on top.

Why price by time? What does "true hourly rate" mean?

Custom work is mostly time: messages, sketches, revisions, making. If you only price for materials, that time is free. Your true hourly rate is what you keep after Etsy fees, materials, packaging and shipping, divided by the hours you spent. If it's lower than the rate you set, the price is too low.

What do Offsite Ads do to my margin?

When a buyer finds you through an Etsy ad on another site and buys, Etsy takes 12% or 15% of the order total (capped at $100 per order). Which rate depends on your shop's sales over the past year. On a $40 order, 15% is another $6, more than all the other fees put together. Pick "Yes" under Offsite Ads above to see the price you'd need.

Do US sellers pay a regulatory operating fee?

No. Etsy charges it to shops in some countries, including the UK, France, Italy, Spain, India and Türkiye, but not to US shops. This calculator uses US seller rates, so it shows that fee as $0.

    What does Pro add?

The calculator stays free. Pro ($9, one time) is for pricing many products: save each one as a profile, compare them all in a batch table, and print a price sheet or download a CSV. Your profiles stay in this browser on this device.
